JASMIN JAHJA

Communications & Event Manager, Malmö, Sweden

Hi Jasmin! How are you, and what are you up to today?
I’m better, slowly recovering from months of VAB (taking care of sick children, for all of you non-Swedish/non-parents out there) and sickness. This fall has been rough on us…

Tell us a little bit about yourself – where do you live, what do you do for a living?

I live in Malmö, the best little big city on earth. I work with communications and events at Beyond Us, a fantastic place that is so many things at once: a store/showroom, café/bar, event space, co-working and conference space (and my second home!) It’s a perfect fit for a versatile and multifaceted person like me.

What did you do before Beyond Us?

I’ve done a lot of fun things, most recently being on maternity leave with my twin girls born in 2018. Before that I planned events and made learning resources for children about sustainability and children’s rights. And then everything from styling celebrities and assisting music video productions, to working at a transit home for unaccompanied children who fled to Sweden in 2015. I have also had a shop in Malmö with you! That was fun!

What does a regular work day or work week look like for you?

I really love that no work week is ”regular”. I’ll be doing flower arrangements one day, meeting customers in the store or café the other and making plans for future events and marketing activities on the third. I’m working on finding more of a structure to the way I work - but I also value that I am a flexible person who can adjust quickly to whatever needs to be done.

What’s the best thing about your job?

My amazing colleagues and the space itself. Everyone is so open, positive and supportive. We can go from idea to action in a matter of minutes? Sounding cheesy but a 1000 sqm space in the center of the city really brings endless opportunities.

You have a great sense of style, both when it comes to fashion and interior. What inspires you when it comes to dressing yourself and your home?

Thank you!!! My original inspirations are the women in my family before me, on both sides, who have all had an interest in design, arts and culture. I learned so much from them and I find so much joy in surrounding myself with beautiful things that they have picked out. Both vintage clothes and interior design. But I also (of course) find a lot of my daily inspiration on Instagram and from friends with great style.

You grew up in Malmö, and lived in other places for a few years before returning home – What is the best thing about living in Malmö?

The best thing is that everything is within walking (or biking) distance. I never minded taking the subway while living in Stockholm, but the freedom I felt when I moved back was indescribable. Also, the fact that Malmö still is a more affordable place to live (comparing to Stockholm) where I feel like the quality of life is significantly better. And of course: that my family and friends are (almost) all here.

What is your favorite piece from Henry Rude, and why?

No doubt about it: of course it’s the leopard strap bag! My favorite bag that fits everything and goes with anything (leo is a neutral, you know!). Forever thankful that you made this bag and I will be a proud leo strap bag ambassador 4-ever <3

What song are you currently playing on repeat:

Christmas songs, of course! ’tis the season and all. My favorite is Stevie Wonder - That’s What Christmas Means To Me.
